This episode was highly entertaining for me to watch and felt fun and cool yet also ominous. This was done through the dark sky and mean nature of the guards juxtaposed with the fairly simple and comedic story that the characters follow.
Joey wishes to join yugi so that he can win money to pay for his sisters operation but he’s not an invited guest. However by giving him a star chip they are both allowed on even though they’ll be at a disadvantage for the tournament. As well as this Tristan and Téa sneak on because, why not?
I was really impressed with the way they made yugi’s deck fairer by having Weevil throw away exodia. I could see exodia being something that the anime could rely on to convinces the viewer that Yugi was in a bad situation to just have it solved instantly so I’m glad of this change. Seeing Joey try and fail to save the cards was also quite moving.
There was a side story to introduce Mai and her harpy gimmick but I didn’t really care for it much. In the anime she said she’d give him a kiss but in the manga she said she’d do anything Rex wanted which I thought would be a far more compelling reason for duelling.
Besides all this it was a very enjoyable episode which didn’t dwell on details but moved us on quickly without lingering on anything for too long. I think it’s necessary to have an episode to transition between dualist kingdom to build it up and also establish some of the personalities of the less well known characters. It was pretty good!
