I had this epic episode review planned out, it was going to be great, but I just thought to myself, let’s read the comments! So I did and nobody really seemed to like it even though I did and then I went to MAL to see the more general opinion (5 for awful and 7 for ok) and glimpsed a review where they said the show felt like it was making fun of mentally ill people. And I was like, “oh yeah, I guess that’s right.” So now I’m not really sure what to think.
On the one hand I found it pretty funny but on the other hand it can be considered quite offensive. The way I justify this too me is that “The guy with the thing shows” like Sakamoto, Tanaka, Saiki and Handa to name recent examples aren’t used to make fun of anyone. The creators of Sakamoto aren’t making fun of everyone for not being perfect and the creators of Saiki aren’t making fun of us for not being psychic. All of these shows use these crazy aspects of their main characters for comedy without offending anyone. So when Aho-girl’s “thing” is just being over the top stupid I can’t really see it being anything else but an innocent exaggeration of an air-head. I can totally understand people being offended but I’m not just because I can’t possibly ever take this show seriously.
So Aho girl is a skit based short episode series where we see minor situations in which stupid things happen, normally resulting in a character being punched or humiliated. And it’s actually the guy doing the punching, luckily Aho girl is extremely strong because it seems like nobody really cares. I guess it is a bit sexist to not allow anime guys to punch girls when the anime girl’s punch guys all the time, it still feels really strange and weird to watch though. I can’t say I support it but I also can’t say I’m offended in any way at all by this. I would make a joke about the oppressed men striking back for vengeance against the tsunderes, giving all anime girls what they deserve but I’ve had people leave my blog, triggered by dumb stuff like that, not realising it’s a joke, so I think I’ll just leave it.
After a lot of joking around the girls mum asks the main character to try and do something to make her better to integrate well into society. So I look forward to watching this happen as I stay hooked on this brilliant new comedy series which won’t get dull at all once the joke gets old!
Thank you for reading this post from JEARETTAS Day 25! If you have any episode suggestions for me to review then you are unfortunately too late. But don’t worry, you can search the JEARETTAS archive for something you might like anyway!
