Black Jack is the “Surgeon with the Hands of God,” a mysterious young Japanese doctor who travels the world performing feats of miraculous surgical genius. Though all recognize his skill, Black Jack is widely hated, especially by the medical establishment, because he refuses to conform to rules of any kind, and because he charges outrageous fees for his services. Black Jack’s only companion is Pinoko, a child he created out of a special kind of tumor called a teratoma, who insists she is his wife.

Black jack is a pretty big ongoing series as far as I’m aware and this is a fairly good place to jump into the series if you like that sort of thing! Black jack is a doctor who charges vast amounts of money for doing the most impossible and difficult medical operations.

I wasn’t actually very impressed with this show, the scenarios may have been cool but they got old very quickly and the show felt very slow. I would have preferred a faster pace with maybe two operations per episode to avoid the slow pacing that made me find it difficult to continue.

Something you might find interesting is that the adults wife looks like, and behaves like a little child. It’s not sexualised at all so I’m fine with it but I couldn’t help but find it strange when it wasn’t his daughter or something.

Every premise that you like the idea of is worth a look at episode one, black jack has a pretty big following anyway so maybe there will be something here for you.

  1. I absolutely adore Black Jack, and this special is what got me into it. As you said, this is the best starting place for Black Jack, unless you want to read the manga (which most people wouldn’t). As much as I like these specials (I gave them a 6.7) I can see how you wouldn’t be impressed by them.

    • I’m glad you like it, there are a lot of shows that look like they have a lot going for them but the fact that they feel so slow to watch often makes it difficult. For shows like those it’s way better when I episode review them since I write in the non-dialogue moments and don’t notice it as much. And that’s a pretty specific rating! I guess you take your ratings seriously, I used too but then it became too much of a hassle. As you may notice on ADB I don’t give ratings anymore and only on MAL since I can’t be bothered to check through the whole list to make sure it’s all consistent.

  2. I haven’t watched much of Black Jack but I got about half-way through Young Black Jack. It didn’t really work for me because while the scenarios are cool there’s not a lot else going on.
