As of a few weeks ago I started to get into watching professional wrestling because it actually is really interesting.
The people who don’t like/watch it use the words “but it’s fake” like it means something where in actual fact its genuineness is completely irrelevant of its main appeal. The reason why you watch it is for the personalities of the fighters, the extreme stunts that take place and the story lines that the matches follow.
The charisma on display is so fun to watch because guys getting annoyed at each other and having angry rants at each other is really entertaining. The stunts are cool as well.
The good thing about experiencing a new entertainment medium is that you’ve not seen any of the good stuff. You get to see all of the coolest things all in one go and it feels great!
I got into it through Enless Jess’s series of podcasts talking about Wrestlemania and I would have left it at that if not for the fact that the people I sit next to in maths were talking about Nakamura and we got into a discussion (where I was massively embarrassed due to my lack of knowledge) which really entertained me. So I asked about how to follow WWE, was told to just subscribe to WWE on youtube and watch the videos.
Then that would have been fine but there is one dangerous wrester that might just ruin all of wrestling for me. It’s CM Punk. Not because he is annoying but because he is so good that he makes everyone else look bad. It’s difficult to imagine how someone can be so good on the mic that they ruin my respect for the Rock because I can’t stop referring to him as “Dwayne” in my head with his cynical, biting tone in an instant!
But don’t take it from me, you can watch the clip yourself.
This was one of the best things that got me into wrestling. Whats so good about it is how genuine and real it was, the guy actually thinks these things and it really shows. The CM punk pipebomb was fire and the more context from the rant my friends gives me the better it gets. For example the fact that when he said “his idiotic daughter and son in law” referred to wresters triple H and his wife!
Watching CM Punk feels epic due to his mic drops and insane charisma, he outshines all of the other wresters and completely destroys my respect for them. Why didn’t this guy get ice cream bars? He absolutely deserved them! So being in a CM Punk binge is making everyone else look bad, and you need look no further than someone like Roman Reigns who is the most uncharismatic person and I’m surprised that WWE still promotes him.
It saddens me that Punk left WWE but as a compromise the interviews he gives after his leave are killer. The “make Roman look REALLY strong” lines were hilarious!
To me since wrestling is fake anyway, you may as well make the personalities the most brilliant possible and CM Punk is the ultimate underdog!
The only person who I’ve seen so far in 2018 that could possibly replace him was Nakamura (and of course broken matt) because of the recent AJ styles promo he made after punching him in the nuts. He has that slimy and wicked personality that’s really entertaining so I look forward to see him continue on the way he is! (Bear in mind I hardly know anyone in WWE so take those earlier statements with a pinch of salt)
(The clip that got me into Shinsuke)
Maybe I just like the villains better than the heroes because they don’t care what they say, can piss people off for no reason and come down hard in aggression against people who really don’t deserve it that much. That sort of dynamic is interesting to me and it is what I love.
Also I may as well talk about the fakeness of it. In a CM punk interview years after he left WWE he said that he keeps the same training routine for WWE as he does UFC which is really fighting. That shows that despite it being planned out the pain the wresters inflict on each other is still real because it wouldn’t look realistic if it wasn’t! At the end of the day the wrestlers are still badly beaten up but it’s just planned, but because its planned its often more interesting!
The last addition that I will make which is very personal to me is that getting into wresting is really great because it’s interesting to see Endless Jess’s references. There is a whole bunch of horseshoe finale which is heavily inspired by CM Punks pipe bomb with a lot of the same quotes and mannerisms and it’s brilliant to learn about!
I thought that was punk! I haven’t watched wwe in years, but my family was really into it for quite a while. I actually watched it back when CM Punk was introduced as the villain against mysterio and I watched him get defeated. Mysterio, Big Show, and Edge “the rated r superstar” were our favorites. We even got to see them all wrestle In person when they came to our area. Wow, good memories.

Sounds good! My first impression of mysterio was that he sucked because I saw him enter a royal rumble where everyone in the ring was double his size and he got chucked out straight away. It’s only now I’m learning that he’s actually pretty cool!
I’ve heard of all those guys but don’t know them very well but I’m sure I’ll find out more at some point. If you wanted to get back into it subscribing to their YT channel is fairly easy because they only release 3 minute videos and keep you informed.
It sounds cool to watch them live, that must have been amazing!

It was! I don’t really see my self getting back into it any time soon. I look back at it nostalgically, but I’m not looking to revisit it Just yet. I’ll occasional rent advd and watch it with my dad though.

Yeah that’s fair enough. In a way it can be nice to look back on it instead of catching up and seeing what you liked become completely different.

The only NJPW guy I know is Tetsuya Naito and he seems great. I did initially subscribe to NJPW but I found it hard to follow as I prefer to listen to wresting than read subtitles when it comes to promos and stuff.

it’s a different presentation than WWE, more stiff fighting and in ring storytelling so its hard to get used to it if you start out with WWE. Omega vs Okada is amazing. I hope you’ll like that one

Thanks! I actually know all of Omega vs Okada because of a super eyepatchwolf video, it sounds great! I sort of want YT videos explaining the whole stories so far but the NJPW channel I was following that explained these things got deleted for copyrights before I was able to catch up with everything else on their channel.

I think you’re talking about showbuckle. omg, his YT is deleted?! He also made me care about NJPW with his incredible insight on in ring storytelling.
But for a good WWE and NJPW mash, I think ROH is also a good choice. Half the roster of WWE are ROH alums, lol.

Yeah it was showbuckle, sad his channel vanished. I’ll try ROH though.

I’ve been trying to into wrestling but I find it rather hard. All I’ve seen are Triple H matches, and those I all love, but I’m not really sure to start. As a completionist when it comes to things I’m into, jumping in at any point other than the beginning is really hard for me, but starting at the beginning is impossible.

Just subscribe to WWE or other wrestling channels you’re interested in. Then try and follow specific wrestlers. I recommend playlists if you want to see everything from a certain fighter. The broken matt pleeb and the weeb is also a fun start I’m getting into lately.
It’s difficult to get into but I just keep getting recommended random things from friends. I recommend the CM Punk videos and recently my friends recommend the Shield (tag team).
The best start though is probably the Endless Jess wrestlemania podcasts.
I can’t help you that much because I don’t know a lot but I hope this helps!
