Buying shoes is a complete nightmare. I’ve been to every shoe shop in town twice and still not found anything good.
It doesn’t help that it seems everyone is selling running shoes now instead of actual proper shoes. You would have thought that the majority of people were jogging down the street based on how many these shops are selling! Basically nobody runs at all!
Nobody can design shoes well either. They always have to add ridiculous lights, bright pinks and oranges for no reason, or have a really annoying logo everywhere so you’re a walking advertisement. Either that or they’re over £150 and completely not worth it either.
They never have your size as well. Not that anyone knows what their size is. It’s so inconsistent! I’m normally an 8.5 but that means I could be basically anything from 7.5 to 9.5 depending on the whims of how the shoe maker feels when they wake up that morning.
If the shoe works on one foot as well it’s also not guaranteed to fit the other. For me it’s always been either too big, too small, or the right size but the heel is really loose. It doesn’t feel like my feet are even remotely similar to anyone else’s.
Who has time to go and buy shoes as well? I mean you’re not doing it after work, so you have to go during the weekend at the most busy times which also means that the people who bring you the shoes are probably so busy you can’t even find them. Either that, or they just have all the boxes dotted around haphazardly, half of them are missing a shoe or are just the wrong ones put in that pile by mistake.
Doing the same thing online also has the exact same problems except for the added annoyance of everything taking ages to return and everything taking ages to arrive.
The main bonus is that you don’t have to walk around all day in absolutely terrible shoes that have gotten so old you have no choice but to replace them.
I honestly don’t really know what to do now. I think I might need to go to another town or just go through the entire process online.
Update: since scheduling this to release I’ve since bought the exact same shoe that worked for me previously, and it’s better than others I tried in town, but still not great. I just kept them because I just needed something and they were better than nothing.
I can relate. I like to run but I want comfortable daily shoes that are separate from my running shoes – this seems to be getting harder and harder to find, for some reason. I also don’t understand the obsession for bright colours in running shoe designs lol.

Yeah it’s really hard to find anything that feels normal. I’m trying to get into running but when you start you still tend to be walking more (due to running a little then resting) so I’ve not been able to go around in running shoes yet as they’re uncomfortable to walk in. It does mean I’ve got pretty bad impact pains I need to rest through which is kind of annoying. It’s hard to know what other options there are though

You haven’t found any comfortable running shoes? that’s interesting as I have found many myself (but it also depends how much you’re willing to pay). My problem was that places weren’t selling many nice “regular” shoes.

I think maybe I need to spend a lot to be honest. The ones I got were expensive but highly reduced in a sale so they were probably that low price all along. At least since I’m mostly walking they aren’t extremely urgent, and I’ve got a sports trainer now which should be ok for a while.

It can be daunting initially to find good running shoes, so I started with getting a bit of help myself. You could go to shops that put you on a treadmill and then recommend shoes based on your gait, or even just ask store people about good running shoes. Yes they’re also trying to sell something but they should still point you in the right direction. You don’t have to buy, but could try this out at a few different shops before buying. After owning a few running shoes you get to know the brands that are good for you. New Balance and Asics have done some good shoes imo.

Thanks for the advice. I’ve honestly never seen a treadmill in the shop to test that kind of thing but it sounds great, wish we had those. I have been recovering for over a week after not running very much so will probably give myself a break from buying shoes for now

A normal shop won’t have a treadmill you will need to find specialised shoe shops that do this. The Athlete’s Foot is one such place, but I don’t know what that’s like in the UK. Good luck with your shoe search!

Yeah none like that in the UK unfortunately, maybe there are some places in London that do it but I really don’t know, thanks very much!
