Looking after your eyes

It feels as if some people have a natural talent for being able to look at a screen all day without getting tired eyes or a headache. I used to be like that, now not so much. I don’t really understand what changed or how it happened either.

It feels pretty unfair to be honest, I want to be like that too! I chose quite early in my life that I wanted a job that uses a computer, and also picked up hobbies that relied on screens, so it’s left me in a bit of a pickle right now.

I have dry eyes and poor eyesight, always needing glasses, so that doesn’t help either. I’ve essentially been following NHS advice to take a screen break for 5-10 minutes every hour and also follow the 20 20 rule.

For those lucky enough to never have needed to look it up, the 20 20 rule recommends that for every 20 minutes of screentime, you look away at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. It’s so impractical that nobody can ever follow it, but the kind of thing you will find yourself doing quite often when your eyes hurt.

I now have to use eye drops and put a cold press over my eyes every night. It’s pretty annoying.

I suppose the main positive is that it actually makes me want to take care of my eyes and have the breaks I need, do other hobbies off the screen etc. On days where I am much more active I don’t feel any pain at all so I suppose encouragement from my body to live better shouldn’t be considered a bad thing.

I think it’s unfortunately just true that some people naturally have better eyes for looking at screens than others, but at the same time, continuing looking at a screen will make them worse and worse.

Even if you feel fine, the strain will likely catch up to you, so I definitely would recommend listening to your body and taking care of your eyes.

I didn’t really have a point to make about this, just expressing my frustration I suppose!

  1. I’m of the opinion that spending too much time on a screen isn’t good for you, so headaches are a sure sign to listen to your body. I get headaches too, so I take breaks. Having your eyes checked every 2 years is very important too.

    1. Yeah since scheduling this I’ve come to feel that probably those who claim to be ok despite extreme screen use are probably just able to ignore problems better/have them be less noticeable. It seems pretty hard for me to believe that everyone who claims this is genuinely ok. I try to take a 10 minute break every hour at work. I try to do the same at home but I get absorbed in things and it doesn’t go as well
