This song is an interesting one, it was first released in Cantonese (which I don’t speak) but included English lyrics in the chorus. I’m not a fan of these because part of the appeal of singing Chinese songs for me is the fact that only I understand them, this isn’t mentioning the fact that they tend to feel so out of place, and often contain bad pronunciation and grammar, and if you were to fix it it then suddenly loses all sense of rhythm and poetry.

Thankfully this song was adapted into mandarin Chinese and contains 100% mandarin and no English, which means that I can translate it. The meaning of the English was changed completely in the Chinese as well, so that means that it’s worth translating, you can’t look at the English for the other song and find out what it means.

Translation Notes

There isn’t lots to say here, just that the biggest difficulty was putting it together in a way that sounded poetic in English too. For example I would have preferred to translate “放下承诺 保护伤你的我” needed “promise” to be changed to “vow” etc.

The only real section that needed to be altered was “最痛的痛 竟然由我 一手放纵” which was written as “The most painful pain, was actually caused by me” but literally translates to “The most painful pain was actually indulged by my hands”

There is also something to say about the title, which didn’t make sense as “Where did you go” (the chorus from the English version) so considering the comparison between love and writing a song, unfinished seemed right. It literally means “Write not finished” so you could interpret that to mean unending, no matter how much you write it will never end, but I think in this case unfinished is the more likely meaning.
