Listen to Mum by Jay Chou English Lyrics

On the last day of this translation challenge, I’m continuing the theme of parental love. This time it’s a song from the most popular artist in China! This is somehow the first song of his that I’ve translated (mainly because 告白气球 was very strange to translate) so I hope that you enjoy!

Lyrics

Little friend, do you have lots of questions?
Why are others reading manga
But I’m learning to paint and talking to the piano
Others are playing games
But I’m leaning against the wall reciting my ABCs
I said that I wanted a massive airplane
But all I got was an old tape recorder
Why do I need to listen to mum?
When you grow up you’ll start to understand these words
huh

When I grew up I started to understand
Why I ran faster than others
flew higher than others
In the future everyone is reading the manga I drew
Everyone is singling the songs that I wrote
Mum doesn’t let you see her hard work
The recipe of warmth is inside her heart
If you have time hold her hand more
Take her hand and dreamwalk together

Listen to mum, don’t make her feel hurt
Want to grow up quickly so you can protect her
Beautiful white hair, flourishing in happiness
The angel’s magic, kindness in warmth

In your future
Music is your trump card
Use it to fall in love
Oh, I don’t want to teach you wrong
Still, listen to mum, ok?
Fall in love later, ok?
I know your future path
But mum knows it more clearly than me
You will start to imitate other students
Scribbling random things in your school bag
But I recommend it’s best to write to mum
“I will study hard,”
“Study hard.”
How could these words come from my mouth?
I don’t want you to lose
So I call on you to study hard
Mum knitted you a sweater
You need to take good care of it
Because when mothers day comes
I want to tell her that I’ve kept it
By the way I will meet Chow Yun-Fat
So you can brag to your friends
The gambling God of the future is your dad
I can’t find the love letters I wrote as a kid
When you finish writing, don’t give them to others
Because in a few days you’ll find them on the playground
You’ll start to like popular songs
Because Jacky Cheung is starting to sing “Kiss Goodbye”

Listen to mum, don’t make her hurt
Want to grow up quickly so you can protect her
Beautiful white hair, flourishing in happiness
The angel’s magic, kindness in warmth
Listen to mum, don’t make her hurt
Want to grow up quickly so you can protect her

When I grew up I started to understand
Why I ran faster than others
flew higher than others
In the future everyone is reading the manga I drew
Everyone is singling the songs that I wrote
Mum doesn’t let you see her hard work
The recipe of warmth is inside her heart
If you have time hold her hand more
Take her hand and dreamwalk together

Listen to mum, don’t make her hurt
Want to grow up quickly so you can protect her
Beautiful white hair, flourishing in happiness
The angel’s magic, kindness in warmth

Translation Notes

“Little friend” may sound a little strange in English, however it is a very common way to address a child in China and it’s not weird because everyone says it.

Chow Yun-Fat is a famous actor who has appeared in many popular films, these films have been more popular in China than in the west however. If you have seen “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” you will recognise him. He was in “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s end” too.

Jacky Cheung is also a popular singer, if you’re interested their song 吻别 or “Kiss goodbye” can be found here.

Please let me know if there are any more questions, I’m happy to help.

This is the end of the translation challenge as we have now reached the end of May. It has certainly been an interesting challenge and I’ve learned a lot. There is too much to talk about here so I will write something later to discuss everything. The last thing to say is thanks for enjoying the translations!
