What I watched in May 2018! (Recommendations for Anime and Manga)

This post has been a pretty big annoyance to do because My anime list is currently down and I wanted to get this out on the last day of the month. I use MAL to see my anime watch history so I don’t have to track it for myself so this will be from memory. Let’s get into it!

Bakuman Season 1

Bakuman is an anime, adapted from a manga, about making manga and it’s great. It’s a pretty great insight into how shounen jump is made since this is made by people who worked with it a lot!

Since the creators of the manga know a lot of things about jump the things the editors tell the mangaka’s to do is often seen in the actual show and it’s really funny to see. They are able to keep the story highly interesting with new rivals, people, events and plot points.

I’ve read all of the manga for season 1 only and I have to say I like the anime more. The manga is great but it has a lot of text per page. I prefer fast paced chapters which are sparse in dialogue as the sketches are what I like the most. I’m not here to read a book!

The manga is still great, this is just my preference, don’t let me stop you from reading it!

I’ve just struggled to get around to reading it because each chapter always takes longer to read than I think it does and I mostly have been reading other things as I will talk about in the manga section of the recommendations post.

The Wind Rises

I watched the wind rises which is made by Hayo Miyazaki who needs no introduction. I didn’t like this film a lot. I just couldn’t get into it and found it boring. I think the main point of the film was about being a creator and having a passion for what you do.

I guess I sort of just disagreed with the film. For example he spends a lot of the film struggling to make a small plane fly while he goes to Germany and flies a huge plane bigger than he could possibly make. This depressed the guy whereas it would be a huge motivator for me to do better.

The problem with Ghibli films is that half of it is in the visual aesthetic and great animation, so when I see a ghibli film I’ve lost half the battle. My laptop has a really terrible display so all Ghibli films look garbage on it, this means I really don’t feel the appeal of a lot of the film.

I also made a commentary track for no real reason, it sucks and I hate it but it will be available soon if you ever want to do a re-watch of the film.

Goshu The Cellist

I really loved this film so much.

It’s about one young hopeful man working in a small orchestra as a cello player. However Goshu is the one man who is letting the whole group down. He’s not bad at playing, but he’s not as good as the others and makes the sound of the music less good overall. With ten days left until the a huge concert he needs to play in (contrasting the minor events he plays at in the meantime) he really wants to improve.

Goshu is such an easy character to get behind. He is the embodiment of a nice, timid person who just wants to do his best for the orchestra. As a pianist I greatly understand his problems of learning a difficult song yet struggling to master it. You might hesitate for a few moments or play the wrong notes or have a consistent incorrect timing that’s difficult to remove. Goshu is having this problem, and you don’t need to relate because it’s explained well, but it’s just a part of the film I love.

Through the ten day period several animals come to visit Goshu as he is practicing and accidentally help him to unlock his true potetial by coming to him for advice.

It’s a children’s show and the interactions with all the creatures is fairly comedic, light hearted and silly but it’s still a real joy to watch.

The ending is really sweet and I love the coming of age story that takes place.

Now we’re on to manga!

One Outs

I find it really weird when I end up liking a sports anime, but I should by now just accept that they are anomalies that can always surpass my expectations after all Hajime no Ippo is probably my favourite anime of all time.

One Outs takes the psychological warefare of Akagi (Another work by the same mangaka) and puts it into the context of sport. Akagi is a manga about mahjong, a game so complicated that nobody understands it, so one outs by nature of being about baseball is better.

However thanks to RemyFool I have some things I can use to learn the game. Maybe I’ll be able to return to Akagi and enjoy it thanks to his advice. He linked two sites which I recommend you check out to learn the rules. I’ve not got round to it yet so you may even get a head start above me! http://arcturus.su/wiki/Main_Page  and http://www.gamedesign.jp/flash/mahjong/mahjong_e.html

In one outs the main character creates an illegal contract with a baseball company and has to outsmart his boss just to avoid debt. The tactics get very interesting later and I love everything that happens as soon as the anime finishes way better than the anime itself.

Tokuchi adds struggling players to the contract and unlocks their secret potential and does a seriously large amount of good work for the team on the whole with his philosophies on team work which are fairly sound and a lot better than the standard stuff you usually hear.

Liar Game

Of course I would have to talk about liar game. It had an effect on me that made me write about it constantly!

It is basically another gambling manga like One Outs, I’ve reviewed it a lot here!

Each game is a high steaks match for money in which you need to win by tricking your opponents with lies. It’s very interesting!

The main annoying this is how it tends to tell you absolutely nothing! I like seeing what the characters are thinking because it makes the steaks higher, I hate to just be surprised at the end with a huge monologue of how they did it.

Boku Girl

See this is why we need my anime list, I nearly forgot about Boku Girl! In fact I did forget but only remembered just now a few hours later!

Boku girl is about the life of a boy who became a woman overnight, and all the weirdness that follows.

This manga is pretty funny and doesn’t take itself too seriously. A lot of the jokes might be about the side effects of living in a girls body, like him being convinced that girls pee facing the back of the toilet straddling it like a reverse chair.

It is fairly ecchi and draws a weird line where it can show nudity, but only of the guy with a body of the girl. I think this is because the mangaka must think of him of a guy even though physically he isn’t.

Then theirs a bit of a love triangle where the guy as a girl loves the girl, the girl loves the guy’s friend, and the guy’s friend loves the guy who turned into a girl. Because of this it’s pretty awkward and funny. The jokes where the guy slowly falls for his best friend is exceptionally funny because the guy clearly has no idea what’s going on. Even after he kissed him the guy still wasn’t able to join the dots!

Then there are fun side characters like Loki, the God Loki, and a freaky underwear collector who I don’t like so much.

It’s a really fun manga so I recommend it! I’ve not finished it so I will be contending it in the next month when I’ve finished it instead of this month.

So let’s have a look at the updated tables for May!

    1. Yeah it’s great! I don’t remember if I told you this (I probably did) but I got the recommendation from your favourites list on MAL before it went down so I knew you liked it. Do you like it for the same reasons I do or are there extra things I’m missing?

      Liked by 1 person

      1. I like it from the reasons mentioned, but there are also a few other things that become more apparent later on in the manga that boosts it into my #1 spot. But I’m going to be writing a post about it so I won’t specify here.

        Liked by 1 person

          1. Well, I still have to read the whole thing again before I write it (just to confirm my thoughts), so you’ll probably be done by then.

            Liked by 1 person

    1. Yeah from what I can tell the anime is directly adapted from the manga so if you like the manga you won’t miss anything from the anime.

I think it’s just which you prefer out of anime and manga to decide which version you should watch/read.

    1. I like Totoro and MAL lists Gosho the cellist as made by Ghibli even though technically it was a different studio. So that’s three! There might have only been 5 or 6 Ghibli films that I’ve seen and disliked (can’t check because MALs down) but the ratio isn’t that terrible.

Yeah I would love to like them though. I just think they’re boring. Ponyo and Totoro feels fun and pleasant while the others I’ve seen just bore me. They’re the kind of films where I think they should be half the length yet have the same amount of plot because the films feel really stretched out to me.

I’m sure there are more Ghibli films that I like but they probably are the ones most similar to ponyo.

      1. Well it’s impossible to not like Totoro!!! Okay, okay, everything you said is fair. From memory there’s 21 films, and the only ones I don’t like are Pando KoPanda and Pom Poko so I’m just a very biased person. But I can see how you can think that some of them can be boring since some of the story lines like Whisper of the Heart and Ocean Waves aren’t as exciting as things like Howl’s Moving Castle or Princess Mononoke…

        Liked by 1 person

        1. Well the ocean waves is way more interesting than mononoke or castle. Moving castle is the only Ghibli film so boring I dropped it half way through and Monoke was bad until the end. I’m fairly neutral on ocean waves yesterday.

Partially because of your last comment I tried to find another Ghibli film that I liked, so I watched porco rosso and I really liked it!

          Liked by 1 person

          1. Damn… Howl’s Moving Castle is like, my all time favourite hahah. And I really like Princess Mononoke because of the environmental theme and feminism. But I understand they’re not everyone’s thing.
Also Porco Rosso is great! It’s pretty interesting, and has such likeable characters 🙂

            Liked by 1 person

            1. I did not notice any feminism at all in Mononoke, that probably just shows how much I wasn’t paying attention. My laptop displays visuals really badly and it makes Ghibli films look like trash, so those environmental backgrounds just really suck for me. There are so many shots of the environment in the film and because they suck on my laptop they’re a boring waste of time for me which is why I don’t like it.

I got half way through moving castle and dropped it because it felt like only one thing had happened and the rest was just a waste of time.

Yeah I think just having a talking pig walking around is very funny. The bad guys were comedic and fun and that engineer girl was also great.

              Liked by 1 person

              1. Oh I meant like how environmentalism is the central theme of the movie… There’s the great backgrounds (which mustn’t be great when it comes to watching stuff…) which are really cool because everything’s pretty much hand-drawn and coloured but I just think it’s nice that that’s the movie’s main theme.
I feel that to like Howl’s Moving Castle you probably need to really be able to relate to Sophie and like the world design and characters. That’s something I really enjoyed but it’s definitely not everyone’s thing.
But for the feminism part you didn’t pick up on anything? That’s really interesting (I hope that doesn’t sound offence I don’t mean for it to be I just mean like it’s an interesting thing to hear I’m sorry if that sounded bad). It’s one of the main reasons why I love Ghibli movies so much – because they’re all quite feministic.
Comedy in Porco Rosso is pretty much the reason I like it hahah. The air pirates and Fio make the movie for me! 🙂

                Liked by 1 person

                1. Yeah I really didn’t relate to Sophie. I’ve not suddenly turned into an old woman so I wouldn’t know! I don’t know I’ve just not felt a way similar to that and if I have I’m just like “oh well” though if it was that extreme the reaction would be a lot different.

I suppose they are more feminist than others, but I don’t really think having a female lead or female person in power is femistic. I always think of it as guys going “Oh no women can’t do this” and then a woman does it. That happened in porco rosso with the mechanic for example.

I wouldn’t mind if that not noticing feminism thing sounded bad even if you meant it to be bad. I’m going to be honest and admit that the first 30 minutes made me zone out so I didn’t pay attention to anything for the rest of the film so I could definitely have missed something.

I missed the environment thing as well and only later thought about it. When I learned that I was like “yeah I guess” because I didn’t really care that much.

                  Liked by 1 person

                  1. I guess that’s good though that you haven’t felt like Sophie! I’m insecure like Sophie so I related to her very easily and liked how she developed more confidence throughout the film 🙂
Ahh okay that makes sense! I always think of feminism as equality between the sexes and Ghibli presents very realistic and varying personalities for their female characters who are equally capable to men in the films and no-one expects it to be any different so that’s what I like. I also like that the Ghibli males can be sensitive and don’t feel pressured to be the ‘tough guy’ and can just be who they want to be. And Fio was great with the mechanic part in Porco Rosso 🙂
Hahah yeah that’s cool. I tend to lunge at things with an environmental theme and watch them but it’s not everyone’s favourite choice of theme to explore

                    Liked by 1 person

                    1. Yeah I get that. I’ve been insecure about a lot of things but never looks. I guess I have a “get over it attitude” to do with things that are difficult to control, which is terrible advice. I probably would have liked the second half better because it sounds like she tries to deal with it later and turn back, but I dislike that idea of worrying about things out of your control even though I still do it I find it annoying to see.

I think that’s a good thing about Ghibli films. I just don’t question whether she is capable because I would just believe it. Like I would have trusted Fio from Porco Rosso to do anything after she was introduced.

I like that pressure of a “tough guy” theme in films a lot. I prefer it from the tough guys perspective though. I find it an admirable trait to be the guy who has it all together so people rely and trust in you while keeping your fears to yourself as in putting on a front to make everyone else feel better, or make your issues look minor just so people don’t worry about you. It’s sort of a character flaw but I really like and relate to that character. Takamura from Hajime no Ippo or Golden age Griffith from berserk are examples of that character which I really like.

I probably don’t like that theme as much because it feels out of my control. Fixing global warming is a group thing that I’d find it difficult to work towards, especially when you learn that the four biggest boats make more pollution than ALL of the cars in the world and things like that.

                      Liked by 1 person

                    2. Even if you think the ‘get over it attitude’ isn’t the best, that’s still so great that you aren’t insecure about your appearance and things you can’t control!

Oh okay yeah that makes sense! I’m probably just biased too because my favourite male characters are always the more sensitive/emotional/sweethearts, even if that part of their personality aren’t their most predominant personality traits. Not saying that the ‘tough guys’ can’t have those traits though or that I don’t like their characters, I just mean my favourite male characters tend to end up being like Jean (AOT) or Yuuri (YOI) or even Kristoff (Frozen) and Flynn (Tanged) (when it comes to something like Disney) 🙂

Ahh yeah global warming is never a ‘fun’ topic to discuss… I’m just glad that there are some people out there who do care and who are trying to advocate for change and people who are trying to be good global citizens. I figure that small steps are better than none at all 🙂

                      Liked by 1 person

                    3. Oh I mean it isn’t the best advice, though I do agree it’s not the best either. I think it’s better to improve yourself instead of trying to get over it.

I think those sensitive/emotional traits are still really good to have. I don’t really know any of those characters very well but I see it. I probably prefer sudden emotional moments as they have more impact than a character consistently being emotional, though I think you’re talking about caring which is a lot better for the show.

I can’t really explain that “tough guy” thing very well because it doesn’t really make sense and is kind of stupid. It just resonates with me somehow because I get that motivation even if it’s misguided.

Yeah that’s true. It’s not like we should give up just because it feels out of our control.

                    4. Hmm yeah that makes sense. Because if it’s something you can’t change then it’s probably better to change your mentality so that the thing doesn’t bother you anymore…

Yeah they’re all quite caring characters. They also show their emotions 🙂 I’m just not a big fan of characters who hide how they feel or like to act like cardboard…

Oh no that’s fine! We all have different things that resonate with us 🙂

                    5. Sure but change for the better if possible. It’s difficult when you’re busy but if it’s important you’d probably want to change it anyway.

Yeah that’s fine. I don’t mind characters who hide it, I just want to know if they are hiding something. If they are everything they are on the surface the character isn’t that interesting.
